AUTOPSY
Surviving trauma is a deep psychological wound that heals and remains a scar etched into a person’s consciousness, bearing visible traces of their history. As with any wound that heals slowly, it is necessary to accept that it exists, that it changes and shapes us as human beings, and that we alone have to find a balm with which to nurture that wound. With the help of the medium of photography, Ivan Buvinić faces his personal experience of trauma and, at the same time, questions the very role of photography as well as its (in)ability to represent traumatic events and their effects on the individual.
Together with Ivan Buvinić, we have developed an identity and catalogue for his Autopsy exhibition. In tune with the motifs and themes displayed through the exhibition catalogue, our approach was to deprive of the superfluous, focusing only on the copy and photographs supported by meticulous white on black printing. Layout disregards standard typographic style elements — having no page numbers, paragraph breaks and traditional hierarchy. Everything comes to life in print, by using black (paper) stock in combination with white ink, which creates an immediate photo paper effect in contrast to deep black matte paper.
